Startup Happy Hour feat. Intervuse
One of the things that we love the most about working at Mantle is the you never know what or who you are going to run into on any given day. Networking is one of the key value-adds that working out of a cooperative workspace offers over say working in a coffee shop or your living room slippers. It was just a run-of-the-mill Wednesday when we started chatting up Ryan Stephen, a new co-worker who just stopped in to work every Wednesday on his day off.
It turns out Ryan was doing something pretty rad in his spare time.
Ryan is the CEO and co-founder of Intervuse, a marketplace and video chat platform connecting inexperienced individuals looking for advice, support, and interview practice to accomplished “experts” who have relevant experience. Ryan’s background includes a Bsc in Biochemistry and Psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi, a Neuroscience internship in Munich, and Msc in Genetic Manipulation from University of Sussex in the UK.
Ryan also moonlighted as a digital specialist in-between studying and applied to medical school in 2013. That's where his ah-ha moment hit.
"I found it incredibly difficult to find medical students and doctors that would spend time answering questions and help me practice his med-school interview, Ryan recalled. "There was no clear incentive for someone I didn’t really know to spend 30+ minutes helping me. I felt so unprepared but it worked out because I found that digital was my real passion.”
Ryan took this frustration, and with his co-founder Andrew Davis, turned it into an opportunity to design and build a new platform to help students better understand and prepare for their future.
"What we found once we started was that Intervuse could do much more," Ryan added. "What we had produced was a platform that could connect anyone, anywhere, on any subject. We could give novices everywhere access to the hard-earned and coveted wisdom of experts. Intervuse gave both sides something they wanted - novices get the wisdom, experts get some dough!"
Intervuse makes it easy to find, connect, and communicate with experienced individuals for 1:1 video interviews or “consultations”. The marketplace format means that experts get paid for their time, ensuring that everyone always has a willing network they can tap into at anytime.
“Intervuse is not a social network - it’s a social support network focused on two individuals exchanging information in a dynamic real-time conversation where expectations are clear for both parties” says Ryan.
Among other uses, Intervuse hopes to connect undergrad students to grad students, Youtube advice stars to their audience one-on-one, and cancer patients to cancer survivors to share success stories.
The simple beauty in Intervuse's promise is this, as stated by its founder: “Google will connect you to a blog post if you are looking for stock market advice but Intervuse will connect you to the person who wrote it."
